Being told that you have been diagnosed with diabetes is not always easy to accept. However diabetes is not a mortal disease provided you do exactly what your doctor tells you. One of the most important ways to get along with your life is to take medicine regularly and use your diet to support your body system.

Many nutrition experts say that there is no one particular diet or treatment for diabetes. However special attention must be paid for carbohydrate consumption along with keeping the blood sugar levels constant.

What is Diabetes?

When the food is digested it is converted into glucose (a kind of a sugar), and is absorbed into the blood stream making it blood sugar. The insulin released by the pancreas is needed for glucose to get into body cells. In diabetic persons this insulin is less, which makes the blood sugar to remain in the blood instead of being used by the body cells. This results in more blood sugar.

Starches

Starches like breads, cereals and other starchy vegetables are good for health in general. Opening up to take these foods in six servings per day promises good health. Other foods that contain starch are cooked black beans, salads or casseroles.

Fruits and vegetables

Fruits and vegetables everyday add perfect balance. They provide dietary fiber that is so important in excretion of the wastes from the body through the anus. Though there are many theories about eating fruits and vegetables without cooking them, it is really up to you how you would want to eat them. Of course, the main ingredients should not be lost in cooking or boiling fruits or vegetables. Apart from this, drugs can also alter nutritional status, which may result in anorexia and weight loss.

Sugars and sweets

There is one myth about diabetes – that sugar worsens diabetes. Sugar and sweets have nothing to do directly with blood sugar levels. However it is the glucose (a type of sugar) that increases the blood sugar levels. Therefore when you are not sure what kind of sugar you are using, include sweets in your diets only once or twice in a week.

Planning Diabetes Diet

A diabetic diet should be planned after considering the medical condition, lifestyle and eating habits of the diabetic patient.

Carbohydrates take five minutes or in some cases three hours to digest. Proteins take three to six hours while fats take more that eight hours. That’s the reason why fat intake is not advised. This doesn’t mean that fat should be completely forgone or carbs should be taken in huge amounts. Carbs and fat directly contribute to energize the body. Therefore they should taken in such a way that they are balanced. Physical exercise helps in burning off these excess carbs and proteins. Any.Saturated fat should be controlled i.e. meats and poultry products should be consumed only once in a while or with a proper plan only.

Low carbs diet is high in fat and low fat diets are high in carbs. Both are not recommended as any of carbs or fats can directly affect the heart of a diabetic patient. Exercise is always considered the best way to keep oneself fit and healthy. A jog or a walk (for elders) is advised to burn of the extra fat or un-utilized carbs keeping the weight in control. Though difficult to do, it certainly helps in keeping diabetes in check.

But no matter what, blood sugar levels need to be checked often to be aware of how the body is being affected by the diet.
