In recent years it has been observed that there is a constant rise among emotional eaters. There are many reasons that attribute to this fact and change in lifestyle, stress, loneliness etc are some of the factors. People manage with food to deal with their emotions.
Types of eating disorders-
There are basically two types of eating disorder namely anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. In the former case people deliberately starve themselves as they are convinced that they are obese or overweight. This starvation is due to extreme fear gaining weight that in some cases leads to hospitalization and even death. The later kind is negative variety of overeating and gorging. It may lead to vomiting and irrational ways of controlling weight. People make secretive measures in combination to purge and often shy away in dealing in a practical way.
Some of the reasons behind emotional eating are-
- Food operates as a stress reliever and causes distractions from the uncomfortable, negative emotion around. There is a strong reaction against feelings with food.
- Emotional eating impacts the emotions and physical well being of a person and quality of life. Sometimes Bulimia (binge eating disorder) or clinical depression is also observed.
- Anger, depression, fear, perfectionism and frustration leads to overeating. Positive healthier way should be made to channelize and divert the emotion in constructive ways.
- This kind of disorder runs in families and is carried in genes.
- There are spiritual reasons behind this as well. Exploring oneself, existence of life, disappointments, and relationship with the world is some of the unanswered queries that haunts the mind of people who ultimately take refuge in eating.
Ways to battle over eating-
It can be treated if the symptoms are diagnosed at an early stage. Family support plays a large part in this.
- Question yourself that you are an emotional eater. If your food is simply “food for thought”. The baggage of emotions is dealt with eating that causes distractions.
- Every time you want to comfort yourself with food recognize whether it is to satisfy your hunger or emotional need.
- Dieting and checking your weight worsens the situation. Check on yourself; take time to discover about your overeating and fixation with weight. Be truthful with the problem and deal in a realistic way.
- Engage yourself in some class, craft or any other constructive habit. In this way one can cope with their behavior in a strategical way. Working under a coach and counseling works wonders.
- Love yourself and take care. Make a list of all the things that you love to do. And every time you feel like eating divert yourself by indulging in doing things for yourself. This works in a fruitful way in the long run.
- In case of bulimia a complete physical examination by doctor ensures one to check if there is any other kind of illness.
- Deal with the traumatic events, abuse that has left a scar in your mind and address them.
Build your self-esteem and confidence and let out all the emotions that you have suppressed over the years.
- With the combined interaction and plan treatment should be done. Emotional behaviors, spiritual help, love from family, physiological problems, good nutrition and proper counseling helps to overcome the situation and be a winner.
