Food and good nutrition is vital for the proper functioning of the body. The digestive system is a complex structure of series of organs that take care of the digestion, assimilation and absorption of nutrients of the body. This composite system breaks down the food into simpler components into its basic nutrients. The organs that take part in this complex process are esophagus, stomach, intestines, colon, rectum, liver and pancreas. It takes six to eight hours for the food to pass after consumption. A well balanced diet containing all the required nutrients in correct quantities is the ultimate solution. Some ways and food habits are recommended for that can check all kinds of digestive disorder.

  • Consumption of large amount of fiber, fruits and vegetables and food grains makes the passage easy for the food. Roughage is an excellent form of food for softening food and preventing constipation, diarrhea, hemorrhoids, Diverticular disease and colorectal cancer.
  • Reduction in fats and oils that has high value of saturated and trans fatty acids can slow down the digestion process. This may ultimately lead to heartburn, bloating and constipation. Under extreme cases irritable bowel syndrome and crohn’ss disease can occur.
  • Removing the skin from meat lessens its fat content. Meat can be boiled, poached, baked or micro waved. Always use low fat dairy products. The top of the stew and soups can be chilled and skimmed before serving. Seasoning with lemon, herbs and spices does the trick.
  • Replenish and hydrate the body with plenty of water. It is suggested that at least 8 ounces of water should be taken. Water acts as a lubricant and dissolves the minerals and vitamins and other nutrients facilitating easy absorption by the body.
  • Avoid alcohol consumption and smoking. Sodas and beverages containing cream and chocolate can inflame the stomach lining causing heartburn, nausea and diarrhea.
  • Chew food properly and completely. And eat in moderate quantities at regular intervals. Large meals, and untimely gorging and binging on food leads to bloating and abdominal distension. Never skip the meals as it may put a person to overeat.
  • Breads, cereals and starches should be consumed in large quantities. Opt for occasional treat in form of desserts and sweets with fat free milk, nonfat ice cream and frozen yogurt.
  • The body should be perfectly balanced in terms of weight, as extra weight may increase the pressure from inside causing uneasiness. Exercises regularly under the able guidance of a professional. Meditation and yoga tai chi etc reduces the stress and helps in speeding the digestive activity.
