Diet for Rheumatoid Arthritis

According to the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases, there is no specific food that is either harmful or beneficial for Rheumatoid arthritis. But is wise to maintain an overall nutritious diet and stress more on sufficient consumption of protein, calories and calcium.

Rheumatoid arthritis is a persistent disease in which the joints holding two or more bones together become swollen and cause stiffness, pain and inflammation. In the long run, the affected joint becomes deformed. Common areas that are affected by this disease are the joints in the hands and feet, shoulders, hips, jaw, and knees.

General Diet for Rheumatoid arthritis:

Though there is no specific mention of any kind of diet, still the following tips can really make a difference in your life. These are:

Eat at least 1 to 1.2 grams of protein per kilogram of your body weight.

Try to take extra folic acid to get rid of Methotrexate.

Try to switch over to a vegetarian diet. Make sure you are having organically grown vegetables only.

Always try to cook your food in extra virgin olive oil.

Fish is a very good source of protein and Omega 3 oils. So try include cold water fish like tuna, salmon, mackerel, herring etc as much as you want in your diet.

Carbohydrates are also very helpful for your health. Foods like fresh fruits, nuts, vegetables, legumes, beans, and whole grains are good source of carbohydrate. Include them in your diet.

Always try to season your foods with onions, garlic, and herbs.

Try to drink always decaffeinated tea and coffee.

If you are addicted to alcohol, 1 glass of wine will do no harm to you.

Try to avoid foods like gluten, citrus fruits, refined sugar, salt, strong spices and preservatives. They are harmful for you.

Try to avoid food items that are high in saturated fat like whole milk, red/marbled meat, oily/fried food etc.

Avoid dairy products as much as possible.

Typical meal Plan for Rheumatoid arthritis:

A typical meal plan will perhaps help you to know exactly what you should eat and what you should avoid.

Breakfast:

1 apple

1 block of wheat cereal with low fat milk

1 egg boiled

1 slice of whole wheat bread toast

Margarine

Light Meal:

I glass of grape juice without added sugar

Tuna/salmon salad with cucumber, celery and low fat salad dressing

1 whole wheat bread

Margarine

Dinner:

20 grams of skinless chicken boiled or shallow fried

125 ml of sweet potato

50 ml of any sauce

Half a bowl of peas

Green salad comprising of tomato, mushrooms, cucumber and lettuce and baked fish of your choice.
