After a gastric bypass surgery one needs to keep up with dietary restrictions. He or she has to follow a particular diet regimen for successful recovery. The diet is prepared keeping in mind the new condition of the stomach, which is delicate and is meant to ensure proper healing of the staple line, and to help you to avoid overeating.
The stomach after the surgery will be able hold less liquid. Eating habits will have to be changed. One will not be able to eat sufficiently to meet the daily vitamins and mineral requirements. Diet plays an important role in meeting these requirements. It has to be carefully monitored.
Tips for Diet for Gastric Bypass
- Calcium citrate is recommended for calcium intake
- More protein should be taken as it helps to heal and also helps in muscle growth and repair and hair-loss
- Items should be low in fat. It may be difficult to digest or tolerate after the gastric bypass surgery. Items such as lean beef or pork, fish ( tuna, crab, salmon) are recommended
- Fast foods should be avoided
- All meats should be prepared by baking, broiling or grilling
- Dry beans and legumes should be consumed
- Eggs and white of eggs
- Non-fat or low fat milk, skimmed milk
- Avoid eating sugary foods. Too much of sugar is not good
- One should have light coffee, tea, carbonated free beverages and nutritional drinks
- One should avoid fruit drinks, iced tea with sugar and soda and alcohol
- One can have egg drop soup, reduced fat cream soups, broth and bouillion
- For starch one should have cooked, refined cereal, mashed potato
- Pureed vegetables and vegetable juice is good
- Peanut butter should be avoided
- High fiber foods that either starchy or high in protein
- Raw vegetables, popcorn, dried beans are bulky foods to digest
- Fiber pills and laxatives should be taken under physician’s advice
- Do not skip any meals
- Take small bites and chew thoroughly
- Have plenty of liquids
- Normal diet is resumed slowly
- Drink fluids between meals
- Take recommended vitamins and minerals
- One should consult a dietician or a nutritionist
One should follow a diet that would help heal after the gastric bypass surgery. The stomach has to be able to digest food, so one should be careful about what one eats. Keep a check on your diet after surgery.
