Can Blindness can be Prevented Through Diet?

Blindness and its Types

Retinopathy is caused due to abnormal vessel growth. Retinopathy due to prematurity, diabetic retinopathy and ‘wet’ also known as age related macular deterioration are some of the leading cause of blindness. Statistics have revealed that almost half a million premature infants and 4 million adults suffer from any of the above-mentioned three causes. Among the adults diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration are the leading causes for visual impairment. The treatment is also limited in most of the cases.

How it effects?

The disease attacks in two steps. Initially there is a loss of blood vessels of the retina, which is responsible for sending visual signals to the brain. As a result there is less or no circulation of oxygen in the retina. The danger indication stimulates in new vessel growth. However the newly formed vessels are anomalous, deformed, permeable and oddly abundant. Finally the growth and development of abnormal vessels hauls the retina detaching it from its place, ensuing blindness.

Risk Factors-

Most of the cases are inherited and due to bad health practices. These are: –

  • Family history
  • Smoking
  • Hypertension
  • Diabetes
  • Light colored eyes
  • Improper eye surgery
  • Ultraviolet rays
  • Environmental pollution

Among other factors, the presence of free radicals also contributes to vision failure. These free radicals are produced in the body due to stress, when body process food in the body. These are unstable molecules that harm the DNA and other molecules.

Clinical trials and experiments have been conducted on mice. During these trials it was observed that those Mice fed on omega-3 had less initial vessel loss than those who where experimented with omega-6 fed mice. The one done with omega-3 where found more docile and successful. The initial loss was 40-50% less and after initial loss the vessels grew more rapidly. Though Trails for AMD have been conducted but they haven’st proved much success.

Consuming more of omega-3 fatty acids DHA and EPA can prevent blindness. These are abundant in fish oil supplements. Omega-3 reduces inflammation in the body. They are available in salmon, herry, mackerel, sardines, and anchovies. Omega-3 can be made in compound form from algae and other sources.

Apart from this dietary supplements and antioxidants also prevents AMD. These protect the eye cells from free radicals. Fruits and vegetables, eggs, nuts, grains, meat and poultry are rich in this, and are concentrated with supplements. Vitamin C, E zinc, beta-carotene and flavonoids have proved to act positively in eye protection. Cartenoids in form of lutein and zeaxanthin and prevent the eye from UV rays and blue light. They are abundant in green leafy vegetables and corn. High levels of flavonoids are found in tea and red wine, they thin blood and improve circulation.

One should lead a healthful lifestyle while practicing a well balanced diet. Engage a min of 30 min regularly in physical exercise. Due to this, the entire body remains fit, it improves blood circulation and energy is enhanced. While going out in the sun protect yourself with a hat, sun screen lotion, sun glasses etc.
By putting these into practices one can ensure a healthy eye care.
