  1. I am a Research Scientist at Rutgers University and have been doing research on the health benefits of cranberry for 17 years. There are a few things that need to be clarified in your article. Cranberry prevents urinary tract infections by a compound called proanthocyanidin which prevents the bacteria from attaching to the bladder wall. If bacteria cannot adhere to bladder cells, they cannot grow and cause infection. The bacteria are washed out of the body in the urine stream. In a number of clinical studies, it was found that cranberry consumption did not result in acidifying the urine enough to kill or prevent growth of bacteria. Urinary acidification is not the mechanism of action of cranberry. As for the other benefits that you mention, there is not enough research to support cranberry use for the prevention or cure of colds or respiratory infections, or for weight loss. It is not necessary to drink 100% cranberry juice to get the benefits for urinary tract health or cardiovascular health. The “cocktail” drinks containing 27% cranberry (both light and regular)have been used in clinical trials and work well.
