Foods to be Avoided for Low Oxalate Diet

There are some foods which increase the level of oxalate to a very high extent. These foods should be avoided completely from the diet. Oxalate is a molecule found in the food we eat. These foods include black tea, cocoa, soy sauce, pepper, grapes concord, lime peel etc which should never be consumed.

What does Oxalate do in the Body

Oxalate combines with calcium in the body. Oxalate gets logged in the tissue blocking the space in the cells and the tissues. It causes irritation and pain to the tissues causing inflammation. Usually cells stop absorption of nutrients when they are available in sufficient quantities. But oxalate gets stuck into the cells and the tissues.

There are few foods which are moderate in oxalate proportion and others with high oxalate proportions in them. List of such foods are given below

Beverages

Moderate:

Draft and stout beer, coffee, grape, tomato, spearmint, lemon c, wine, Beaujolais.

High:

Tuborg and pilsner beer, cocoa, oval tine, chocolate milk, fruit and almond, orange spice, red raspberry, mint medley, perfect peach, strawberry.

Condiments

Moderate:

Ginger, malt powder, nutmeg, pepper, soy sauce, mustard, cinnamon.

High:

Cinnamon ground, soy sauce depending on the quantity, ginger, pepper.

Fruits

Moderate:

Apples, dewberries, cherries, grapes, currant black, apricots, oranges, pineapple, pears, peaches, prunes, tangerines, plums, grapefruits, cranberries.

High:

Blueberries, figs, dewberries, blackberries, currants, grapes, strawberry, raspberries, orange peel, kiwi, lemon peel, lime peel.

Vegetables

Moderate:

Broccoli, carrots, artichokes, garlic, green beans, iceberg, mustard greens, potato, onions, mushrooms, lettuce, cucumber, kohlrabi, pepper green, tomato fresh and sauce, snow peas.

High:

Eggplant, kale, leeks, parsley, escarole, collards, celery, beets, parsnips, poke weed, popcorn, rutabagas, spinach, yams, turnip greens, pumpkin, okra, potato sweet.

Grains

Moderate:

Barley, bread white, cornbread, rice, oatmeal, macaroni, muffins white, cornstarch, ghetto, wheat plain flour, salt line.

High:

Bread whole wheat, kamut, popcorn, graham flour, wheat bran, yellow dock, wheat germ, spelt, cheerios.
