Diverticula are hollow or fluid-filled pouches (tiny) that develop especially in the wall of the colon. When the diverticulum becomes inflamed and ruptures inside the colon, it leads to diverticulitis. Diverticulitis can cause severe abdominal cramping, pain, constipation and fever. Mild cases of diverticulitis can be cured with adequate rest and dietary changes. While severe cases may require surgery to remove the diverticulitis.
During a mild attack, clear liquid diet or low-fiber diet might be recommended. This helps in faster healing of the area of infection. Clear fluid diet may include drinking coconut water or plain water, gelatin, fruit juice without pulp, a light broth, etc. Low fiber diet may include – enriched wheat bread, bagels, english mufins; plain cereals like cornflakes, rice krispies; fruits like applesauce, banana, watermelon; vegetables like alfalfa sprouts, carrots, cereal, etc.
A typical diet for diverticulitis may also include:
High Fiber Food: It is suggested that high-fiber foods help in softening of stool and aid in passing it out of your colon more quickly. This reduces pressure in the digestive tract. The recommended amount of daily fiber is 25 grams for adults.
Some of the high fiber foods that you may eat are:
Plenty of Water: It is recommended to drink plenty of water when you are taking high fiber foods regularly. This is because fibers have the tendency to absorb water. So, if your body lacks water, this can lead to constipation.
