Most of us know the diets which increase the cholesterol and try to avoid them. However, we neglect the foods which actually lower the cholesterol. When you follow a diet which can lower the cholesterol, it can be very much beneficial to your heart and overall health.
Diet for Lowering Cholesterol:
For a healthy heart and better health, you should follow a diet for lowering cholesterol. Here the following foods you can include to lower cholesterol:
Oat meal and Oat bran:
Oat meal and oat bran contain soluble fiber which prevents the absorption of cholesterol in the intestine. This will lower your cholesterol level. You can also include fiber-rich foods such as fruits and vegetables, which also contain soluble fiber
Fish:
Omega-3 fatty acids present in fish such as salmon, herring, sardines, mackerel and tuna lower the cholesterol. Omega-3 fatty acids also reduce the blood pressure and prevent blood clots. You can also take fish oil supplements to get the benefits of omega-3 fatty acids
Walnuts and Almonds:
Nuts such as walnuts and almonds are known to lower cholesterol. They also contain polyunsaturated fatty acids which can keep your blood vessels healthy.
Foods with stenols and stanols:
Plant stenols and stanols are found in nuts, vegetable oils, nuts etc. They prevent cholesterol from getting absorbed into your bloodstream. They also lower the LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol). Nowadays, foods and drinks fortified with stenols and stanols are available. Examples of such foods are juices, margarines etc.
Olive oil:
Olive oil contains antioxidants, which can lower your cholesterol. Consuming 2 tablespoons of olive oil every day is recommended. You can use olive oil in cooking to get its benefits.
Along with exercise, your diet plays an important role in controlling cholesterol. Make sure you follow a diet for lowering cholesterol to stay healthy
