Are you going to be mother of twins?? That’s great. Congratulations and be prepared for exciting period in future. You must be experiencing many emotions: worried, tensed, excitement, etc. all together at a time. That’s pretty natural. As compared to single pregnancy a twin pregnancy is far more complicated. But don’t worry; all you need to do is to take proper diet and complete rest.
The major issue associated with healthy twin pregnancy is the diet. The question arises is what should be a healthy twin pregnancy diet? The answer is simple: “PROTEINS”. The major portion of your twin pregnancy diet should consist of protein as you are eating for 3. As compared to single pregnancy you need extra 1000-500 calories/day. Your twin pregnancy diet should contain:
- Proteins: As told above in case you are expecting twins then your diet mainly should contain proteins. You need to eat at least 90-120 grams of proteins daily. So you need to include high protein sources in your diet plan. Best sources of protein are: Meat, Poultry, Eggs, Milk, Tofu, Peanut butter, Yogurt and Soy based products. It is advisable to drink at least 6 glass of milk as it will supplement your daily requirement of proteins.
- Vitamins: For healthy and safe twin pregnancy you need to take care of your vitamin and mineral intake. Vitamins play an essential role in the development of organs, muscles and tissues of twins. It also contributes in healthy mental, eyesight and hearing development.
- Minerals: You need to consume more amounts of minerals so that each baby receives sufficient amount of them. Some of the essential minerals you need to take care are: Calcium: approximately 1000mg/day, to attain this you need to consume around 4 cups of milk. Folic Acid: it is highly essential during 1st trimester and reduces the risk of developing neural tube defects. Approximately you need to consume 800 micrograms/day. Iron: it is observed that during twin pregnancy iron level falls down drastically resulting in anemic condition. You need to get your iron levels checked up regularly. Fiber: there is possibility of developing constipation during twin pregnancy. Hence it is advised to take fiber supplement.
- Unsaturated Fats: For strong and healthy body during pregnancy you need to consume right amount of fats. Mainly you need to concentrate on unsaturated fats and the best sources are peanut butter, vegetable oils and light mayonnaise.
- Vegetables and Fruits: Try to consume brightly colored vegetables and fruits as they will sufficiently supplement you with all the essential nutrients. Make it a point to eat lot of fruits and vegetables in a day.
- Water: During pregnancy it is essential to keep yourself hydrated especially in case of twin pregnancy. So make it a point to drink at least 2 quarts of water daily. Don’t forget to keep a bottle of water with you whenever you go out.
