Diet to Cure Headache

Apart from the other common causes of headache which we know i.e. stress, hormonal changes, intense sensory stimuli, physical exertion or abrupt lifestyle changes, environmental factors, medications, food can also act as a big, big factor for some people.

Given below are some of the most common factors regarding food that also causes migraines. If you realize that one of the foods listed below is the main cause of your headache, then this is the right time for you to start avoiding that food totally.

Tyramine or phenylethylamine

  • These are the two amino acids found in chocolate, aged or fermented cheese, soy foods, all nuts and most seeds, citrus fruits, and vinegar (red and balsamic).
  • Alcohol

  • Beer, red wine, sherry, and vermouth contain huge amounts of tyramine that can cause migraines. Apart from this all alcohol can cause dehydration, which also causes headaches.
  • Avoid eating leftovers

  • Stop eating leftover foods as tyramine content increases in them which in turn leads to headache.
  • Processed meat and other foods containing nitrites

  • Processed food like pepperoni, bacon, hot dogs, sausages (including chicken, turkey and soy sausages/bacon/hot dogs that list nitrites in their ingredients), bologna, pastrami, jerky (beef and turkey), corned beef, and all other beef/poultry/pork/wild game/fish that has been cured, smoked, pickled, canned or preserved with nitrites. These are very effective in causing headache.
  • Aspartame

  • Foods and beverages made with this artificial sweetener (also known as NutraSweet and Equal) causes headache to a great extent. Try to avoid them as far as possible.
